Helen Sung, solo jazz piano concert on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 7pm at Paul Mahder Gallery

The first concert in a new series "Parlor Jazz Series" presented by Healdsburg Jazz and Paul Mahder Gallery

The first concert in a new series presented by Healdsburg Jazz will be the amazing New York pianist, Helen Sung in solo performance at the Paul Mahder Gallery on Sunday, October 11. A 1927 Steinway Parlor Grand piano and an intimate venue create the perfect setting for Parlor Jazz. Here is a wonderful video that will give you an introduction to Helen Sung if you have not heard of her before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zpq-fPxoBFo

Pianist/composer Helen Sung has spent most of her life in two distinct worlds. A classical student from a young age who transitioned to jazz in her early twenties, she understands the limitless range and potential of the piano in a way that few specialists in either genre can. In addition, as the daughter of Chinese immigrants, Sung embodies two diverse cultures and has discovered a musical voice and identity that are true to both - and more importantly, true to herself.

An award-winning classical pianist before jazz intervened, Helen Sung went on to graduate from the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and win the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Since establishing herself in New York City, she has worked with such luminaries as Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Steve Turre, the legendary Wayne Shorter, and MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter; and, in addition to her own band, can currently be seen with fine ensembles including the Mingus Big Band & Dynasty Band, the T.S.Monk Group, and Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy-winning Mosaic Project.

With five first-rate albums to her credit, Sung’s latest recording, Anthem For A New Day, was her debut on Concord Records. An exciting step forward in Sung’s evolution, Anthem displays a modern artistry and music that swings with a funky intellect while seamlessly integrating her jazz & classical worlds.
