Dana Point’s Festival of the Whales Parade is CANCELED

Cancellation of the Festival of Whales Parade. Other activities still planned.

Sorry to rain on your parade. Who doesn’t love a parade, you ask? Apparently, the National Weather service. But only the parade and street fair are canceled.

The good news - come to Dana Point and enjoy all the other festivities and food this Saturday and Sunday March 2-3 and again next weekend, March 9-10 when hopefully, Mother Nature will be more cooperative. The whales don't care. They will be here, rain or shine. We are open for fun in Dana Point!

The updated forecast shows a storm system passing through our area beginning tonight and continuing through this weekend. Unfortunately, the forecast caused City officials to CANCEL the Festival of the Whales Parade set for this Saturday, March 2nd at 10:00 a.m.

Of greater concern than the predicted rain is the expected wind. A center piece of the parade is the adorable elementary aged kids holding the ropes attached to extremely large balloons. Floating down PCH are whale balloons, of course, but many other sea creatures, lovable characters and other theme appropriate inflatables. But with sustained winds of 5-10 mph, gusting up to 20 mph, the City did not want to risk injury to kids or balloons getting caught in overhead wires.

The City is working with the parade entrants, giving them advance notice of the cancellation. Some participants obviously reading the same weather forecast have already notified the City that they will not be taking part in the parade this year due to the weather.

The festival organizer still intends to go ahead with all other activities as planned. It’s probably a good idea though to check https://festivalofwhales.com/ for the latest updates. There is good news. You can still purchase great Festival of the Whales merchandise. Go to https://festivalofwhales.com/store/. The sweatshirt depicted is not only be cute and comfortable, but it is warm and will definitely come in handy! I love the butter yellow color.

Don't let the weather stop you. Growing up in Chicago, we called this Spring. See you there!
