Lemon Grove Woman Identified in Mission Bay Drive Fatality

Authorities say the 32-year-old was killed Sunday when she stepped out of her car and was hit by another vehicle.

SAN DIEGO, CA: A woman whom authorities said was struck and killed last Sunday night when she got out of her car on Mission Bay Drive has been identified as a Lemon Grove resident.

A report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as 32-year-old Chantella Matira Ferguson.

"...Witnesses stated they observed her abruptly stop and exit her vehicle in the number three lane of Mission Bay Drive in San Diego," the report states. "As she stood in the number two lane near her vehicle, a driver of a four-door sedan struck her."

Someone called 911 and an ambulance crew arrived and took her to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Ferguson suffered multiple blunt force injuries in the collision and was pronounced deceased at 12:02 a.m. Monday at the hospital, according to the report.

The San Diego Police Department's investigation of her death was still pending Friday.

Ferguson was fatally struck at 9:14 p.m. just south of Grand Avenue by a 2015 Kia Optima traveling southbound on the roadway, SDPD Sgt. David Jennings said.

The sergeant said Ferguson, "for unknown reasons, stopped her car and got out of it."

"She stepped into the path of the Kia Optima and was struck," Jennings said.

Police said the 67-year-old man who was driving the Kia stopped at the scene after the crash.
