Mount Miguel residents welcome Covenant church leaders from Latin America

Leaders in town to attend triennial conference of La Confraternidad de Iglesias del Pacto Evangelico (CIPE)

Residents at Mount Miguel Covenant Village welcomed a group of Covenant Church leaders attending the triennial conference of La Confraternidad de Iglesias del Pacto Evangelico (CIPE) last month in Blue Jay, Calif.

Nancy Reed, a Mount Miguel resident and longtime advisor to the group, arranged for 10 guests who flew in from Latin America for the conference to stay at the faith-based continuing care retirement community. “Our residents are gracious hosts, and we were happy to open our homes,” she said. “This was our small contribution to support CIPE’s mission, ‘We are more together, and together we can do better.’”

Through CIPE, Spanish-speaking churches in Latin America connect with the larger Covenant family, share resources and ministries, and send missionaries. Mount Miguel’s parent organization is Covenant Retirement Communities, a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

A retired Evangelical Covenant Church missionary, Reed has served as an advisor to the group for 28 years. At 77 years-old, she said this year is her last active year with CIPE. “I’ve known these leaders a long time,” said Reed, recalling one of her first meetings with the members who are now leaders of the organization. “We grew up together. They are such competent, capable leaders. They support each other in theological education, in training, and in church planting. It is true that the whole is greater than the individual countries.”

The conference was held October 3-7 at the Alpine Camp and Conference Center and drew 112 people representing all of six CIPE countries—Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, as well as Hispanics from the United States. MHIPE, Minsterio Hispano de la Iglesia del Pacto Evangelico (Hispanic Ministries of the ECC) was the host for the event. The theme for this year’s triennial conference was “Casting your nets—into deeper waters.”
