Your Experience Is needed, volunteer with local students who need help with reading!
Be a tutor, Be a Mentor, Be an Experience Corps Volunteer!

AARP Foundation Experience Corps inspires and empowers older adults (age 50+) to serve in their co level -- guiding them to become great readers by the end of third grade. Studies show that children who don't read proficiently by the end of the 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Only 28% of California's 4th graders are proficient in reading. The statistics in San Diego are similar.
Experience Corps San Diego volunteers will tutor children in after school programs of elementary schools
located in Normal Heights, Lemon Grove and City Heights. Volunteers are asked to commit to two afternoons a week, from about 3-5pm, for the entire school
year.
Yes, it's a big commitment...but we're also recruiting substitute volunteers to fill in for the regularly
scheduled volunteers as needed. (It's ok to take a vacation once and awhile!). Volunteers will also need to attend a comprehensive pre-service training before tutoring starts. Ongoing training and support will be provided throughout the school year, as will all educational supplies and curriculum.
