99-Year-Old Livermore High Homecoming Queen Dies

Her reign may have been short, but this former Rosie the Riveter became a local celebrity after being crowned queen at the age of 99.

LIVERMORE, CA — Her reign may have been short, but she lived enough life to fill more pages of the diary than most. Edna Fern (Bireley) Chance, an adorable nonagenarian who was from one of the original families to settle in Livermore, died on Feb. 13 surrounded by her family. In October of 2016, Chance became a local celebrity after her incredible story was featured on Livermore Patch.

Last October, Chance, who was one of the oldest living Livermore High alumni, was invited to participate in the homecoming celebration of the 125th anniversary of the school. Chance, who was supported by her family, braved the chilly temperatures to be crowned honorary homecoming queen. The photo of Chance proudly wearing a green corsage, sash and crown will forever be a part of Livermore High's history.

Chance’s family came from Colorado to Livermore in 1928 after her father worked in the Hetch Hetchy Valley at the O'Shaughnessy Dam. The family eventually laid down roots in Livermore and remain deeply embedded in the community as business owners and residents.

In her younger years, Chance worked in Livermore, and during World War II, like many women, she answered the call of duty, reporting to work in the Richmond shipyards. Chance was one of the few, authentic Rosie the Riveters still living. Her children described her as a strong caretaker and a woman of faith. Chance drove until the age of 92 and attended church in Livermore.

Her services will be held on Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Livermore.
