Beloved Owner Of McGrail Vineyards Dies At Age 64
Funeral services for Jim McGrail, who died on April 29, will be held in Livermore.

LIVERMORE, CA — The day before his 65th birthday, Jim McGrail, owner of McGrail Vineyards and Winery, died in his Livermore home. He was 64. The Oakland native was a lawyer, vintner and retired deputy who gave 14 years to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and worked in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. He was well known throughout the Tri-Valley area.
"He lived life large and never met a stranger," his family said in a statement. "He loved fiercely; his family, his friends, his community, and his country. He was a proud man that believed in hard work and great times. Anywhere and everywhere he would go, he would make friends. He met my mom in high school and spent 42+ years with her and raised us three kids and had eight grandchildren that he adored. We will miss him dearly."
McGrail's family-owned winery, known for its unpretentious hospitality, celebrated their grand opening in 2008. They specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon.
