Celebration of Life Planned for Retired Lawrence Livermore National Lab Employee
Charles Aubrey Hannon died on July 9.
LIVERMORE, CA — Charles Aubrey Hannon passed away quietly on July 9, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was a man of many talents and loved by all who knew him. Born August 15, 1921 in the copper mining town of Bisbee, AZ, he grew up on his family ranch and was the second oldest of 10 children.
After graduating from Bisbee High School, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1939 and was in the South China Sea when war broke out where he served across the Pacific Region in China, Australia, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Alaska. He progressed through the ranks and was commissioned in 1944, then left the Navy in 1946 at the rank of LTJG. He was in the
U.S. Naval Reserve for several years, and studied electronics at San Francisco City College during that time. He later taught school for a year and transitioned to PG&E. He retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory after 35 years.

Charlie was an adventurous outdoorsman, and enjoyed flying, sailing, motorcycling, and camping. In retirement, he and his wife Barbara backpacked through Europe and traveled across the US by RV. They enjoyed cruising together, including a memorable Alaskan voyage to celebrate their 52 nd Anniversary and his 95 th birthday in the weeks preceding his death.
A natural musician, Charlie played guitar, mandolin, and the keyboard. He served his fellow veterans for many years as an avid, volunteer musician in a long-standing Friday afternoon band gig at the Livermore VA Hospital. Everyone who knew Charlie enjoyed his storytelling, cheerful disposition and musical talent.

Charlie was a Past Master and 32° Mason at the Mosaic Lodge, #218 in Livermore, F. &; A.M. and an active member of Aahmes Shrine. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10293 in Ceres, CA and a member of the Unity Church of San Leandro.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Hannon of Livermore, son Jeff Hannon of Ripon, daughters Debra Rock of Lathrop, Susan Winfree and Ginger Crowne of Livermore. He was a much-loved Grandpa to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 10:00am- 12:00pm at the 3 Steve’s Winery, 5700 Greenville Road in Livermore. Guests are asked to remember Charlie by wearing red to the event. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society or Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
