Update 10 a.m. Saturday

A Friday afternoon house fire was caused by propane tanks that exploded in the back yard of a home, sending debris and fence parts at least 50 feet, according to a press release issued by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. (See attached PDF).

The blaze also damaged the exterior of a neighboring home, firefighters said. At one point a liquid stream of flames flowed down the street in the gutter, prompting one fire official to quickly move his parked vehicle out of the way.

Firefighters at 12:41 p.m. were sent to the 2400 block of Normandy Circle, off Concannon Boulevard, for a report of a structure fire.

Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department's Truck 96 was the first to respond to the blaze and saw a large fire to the exterior of a home and heard multiple explosions, Deputy Chief Joe Rodondi said.

The fire appeared to have started along a fenceline before engulfing the garage area. The blaze also extended to the home's rooftop and attic.

"From then it just became a stubborn fire," Rodondi said.

The blaze was contained just before 2 p.m.

Rodondi said no one was home during the incident and that a firefighter suffered a minor injury while battling the blaze.

Authorities encourage residents to place propane tanks in shaded areas and away from sunlight.

Update 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters have contained the blaze in the garage, but continue to fight the fire in the attic.
