Las Positas Men Looking Good In Coast-North

Hawks open with back-to-back routs of Ohlone and Foothill to share first place with CCSF

The Las Positas men's basketball team is off to a rousing start in Coast-North play.

The Hawks notched back-to-back home wins to open conference action last week, trouncing both Ohlone 118-69 on Jan. 8 and Foothill 90-64 on Jan. 10. Las Positas (12-4, 2-0) enters the week tied for first place with City College of San Francisco (16-0, 2-0).

The Hawks were ranked No. 22 in the Jan. 6 CCCMBCA state poll.

Against Foothill, the Hawks closed the show in tremendous style, outscoring the Owls 46-17 in the second half after trailing by three at the half. Andrew Mork and Tyler Langowski each scored 15 points off the bench and Isaiah Abdul had 10 off the bench along with six rebounds.

Michael Hayes led the Hawks with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Wesley Burse made a spectacular block in full flight to deny what looked like a sure Foothill basket on a break as Hawks players leaped from the bench to celebrate. Burse's momentum on the incredible play carried him into the padded wall behind the basket. Burse wound up with 10 rebounds and seven points.

Against outmanned Ohlone, Hayes had another double-double of 20 points and 14 boards. Matt Roseby provided massive production off the bench with a season-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Roseby also had 13 points against Cypress and 10 points and five rebounds against Hartnell.

Seven Las Positas players reached double-figure scoring in the blowout of the Renegades. Marquis Davison, back off an injury, nearly had a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Hawks will look to keep rolling this week with road games at Canada-Redwood City (2-12, 0-2) and Chabot (10-6, 1-1). Foothill, Skyline and CSM are also 1-1 in Coast-North play.

Impressively, Hayes is ranked No. 9 in state scoring (20.9) and No. 2 in state rebounding (11.4). Burse is averaging 11.1 points and six rebounds a game, shooting 51.5 percent from the floor. Mork is at 12 points and five rebounds a game, shooting 38 percent from 3-point range. Lee Jones, Jr. is averaging 10 points and five assists. Nikko Echalas is at 7.3 points and four assists a game.
