Livermore Students Visited By Rep. Eric Swalwell

LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore High School students kicked off a lesson about the U.S. House of Representatives with a visit from none other than the Tri-Valley's U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell.

Swalwell, who was raised in Dublin, swung by Christine Greer's advanaced placement government class to pay a virtual visit to students and field questions, the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District said in a news release.

The students came out swinging, ready with questions about his voting record on immigration and military spending, to which Swalwell replied each bill must be reviewed on its own merits. They discussed the pandemic, money in politics, domestic terrorism, and the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, the district said.

Swalwell shared his own political journey, inspiring students to seek more information on internships and educational opportunities that could lead students to getting involved in government.

"He makes politics and government feel closer," Greer said in the statement. "Kids always say that they had no idea that everyday people like him could be the ones who are doing this abstract work in DC."

Greer said she's noticed a growing appetite in students to make waves in recent years.

“Speaking with Congressman Swalwell first hand gave me hope that as we progress, accountability and true representation in government is possible," said senior Ava May in the news release. "Mr. Swalwell, by holding this event, revealed a personal dedication to making sure the voices of the future are heard today.”

Swalwell encouraged the students — who will soon be eligible to vote — to get educated on issues, vote and keep officials accountable.
