Livermore Teens ID'd Following Unexpected Deaths

A fund to pay for funeral expenses has been started for one of the families. Meanwhile, the community is expressing pain over the loss.

LIVERMORE — Two Livermore teens who died just a day apart have been identified by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Coroner’s Bureau. They were 16-year-old Oceana Breeze Muth, who died on Monday; and 18-year-old Justin William Miles whose death was determined to have happened on Sunday.

While an official cause of death is still pending as toxicology tests are performed, the Livermore Police Department reported on Tuesday that opioid overdoses are suspected in both cases.

After Patch reported the deaths on Tuesday, readers expressed their pain on Facebook. Oceana's uncle Jon Krieg wrote, "One of the teens was my beautiful niece Oceana, who I’ll never get to say 'I love you' again to. Her last text to me on Sunday was 'I love you too Uncle Jon.' I’m devastated as is my sister and family. I will miss her for the rest of my life. My beautiful niece who used to run and jump into my arms when she was younger and give me big kisses and hug me so tight. I’m going to miss her so much!!!! As I write this I’m crying once again. All I can say is 'hug your children' and just tell them you 'love them.' Because you never know when it will be he last time."

A parent, Feather Rae Clark, warned parents about drugs circulating in the community, "This batch of xanex with Fentanyl is currently in Livermore per the kids. Per the kids. Not confirmed by anyone just going off what they’ve said. Grab your children by the hands and tell them. Do they need help? Our job as adults in this community is to help our children...Praying the police find the supplier ASAP but still this batch has been sold to our kids. Quoting my daughters other friend, 'they killed her for twenty dollars. They killed two people for twenty dollars.'"

Meanwhile, schools in Livermore are providing emotional support for teens. A letter from Superintendent Dr. Kelly Bowers read, in part:

"Counselors have been available to students this week and will continue to be available as needed to provide support. We encourage you to talk with your children and let them know that feeling sad or uncertain at this time is understandable, and that counselors at school are there to talk with them and support them through this difficult situation.

"We also encourage you to listen to your child during this time, and help support him or her in dealing with loss. Some talking points for you to consider:

  • Allow your child to talk about his or her feelings. Often, death brings up previous experiences with loss. If this is the first loss your child has experienced, your child may not know how to respond and will be looking for your guidance.
  • There isn’t a “right” way to feel at this time. Affirm all expressions. It’s okay to express feelings honestly.
  • Reaffirm that your child is safe and that your child is loved.
  • Watch for signs of changes in your child’s typical behavior (such as aggression, withdrawal, etc.). Talk with your child about these changes, and reach out to the school for support, as needed.
  • Help your child focus on his or her normal routine.

"If your child needs support, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school counselor."
