Livermorium Plaza Likely To Change Contractor

The lowest bidder on the $3.5 million project was unable to meet the city's insurance requirements.

LIVERMORE, CA — The Livermore City Council on Monday will likely ditch the contractor it hired last fall to build Livermorium Plaza at Mills Square Park and hire the project's next lowest bidder, after Integra Construction Services couldn't meet the city's insurance requirements.

Livermorium is the chemical element co-discovered by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Russian scientists and named after the city of Livermore in 2012.

The granite water ball at the site represents the nucleus of the element - officially number 116 on the periodic chart. Those 116 electrons are represented by various hardscape features in the plaza. The ball and some discs representing electrons will be inscribed with Livermorium-related information and other scientific facts.

Part of the site was a previously a Chevron station, and there are leftover soil contaminates that still need to be removed.

Staff is recommending the council award the contract, not meant to exceed $3,507,000, to Robert Bothman Construction Inc. The contractor recently completed Stockman's Park in Livermore's downtown area.

The plaza will also include shade trees, concrete seat walls, a grassy area, a lighting control system allowing for different color schemes, and in-ground lights surrounding the water feature. Chevron is working with the city to clean up the site, which is required by Alameda County Environmental Health Dept. Including the clean-up, the entire project will cost approximately $4.75 million, according to a city report.

The Livermore City Council will meet virtually at 7 p.m. Monday. The meeting can be found at Livermore's YouTube channel, at https://bit.ly/2QgyToJ.
