Remembering Livermore Resident, Former School District Employee Sylvia Griggs

LIVERMORE, CA — It is with sadness, that the family of Sylvia (Richard) Griggs, announce her passing on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at her home, with her loving family by her side. Sylvia was 83 years old. Born October 30, 1933 in Taft, CA, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Harold and Eloise (Dugas) Richard.

Sylvia enjoyed a very successful career with the Livermore Joint Unified School District, beginning in
1969 as a cafeteria / playground supervisor, progressing through the positions of teacher’s aide, office
clerk, and ultimately retiring in 1993 as an executive secretary at the school district. She married Kyle in
1955 and together they had seven children.

The family has been members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church since moving to Livermore in 1959. Sylvia pursued many interests: she enjoyed her volunteer work with the St. Vincent de Paul Financial Assistance Program, ValleyCare Medical Center, ValleyCare Auxiliary Junior Volunteers, Pleasanton Playhouse, and Bankhead Theater in Livermore.

She enjoyed many years of ballroom dancing with Kyle, attending the annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival in
Ashland, singing in one of the St. Michael’s Church choirs, and gardening.

Sylvia will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 62 years and her 7 children: Kerry Griggs of
Yerington, NV, Tia Volkman of Surprise, AZ, Michelle Courville of Paradise, CA, Lynn Griggs (Michael
Tower) of Canada, Renée (Charley) Russell of Phoenix, AZ, Vince Griggs of Phoenix, AZ, and Dominic
(Jennie) Griggs of Livermore, CA; 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Tony Richard
of Sacramento, CA, and Bill Richard of Bakersfield, CA; 2 brothers-in- law Larry Griggs of Fresno and Bob
(Margie) Griggs of Fresno, several cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Sylvia was pre-deceased by her sister Mary Ann Richard, her brother Jim Richard;
sisters-in- law Helen Richard, Merna Richard, Shirley Joan Bryan, and Marjorie Griggs; and daughter-in-
law Johanna Griggs.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Holy Angels Funeral and Cremation Center, 3885 East Avenue,
Livermore, CA (925) 455-9696. In keeping with Sylvia’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will
be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday September 13, 2017, immediately
followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., Fr. Alfonso officiating. Following the service, family and friends
are invited to a reception, the place to be announced.
