Sometimes you've just got to credit the other team.
Las Positas College men’s basketball coach James Giacomazzi tipped his cap to Yuba after his team’s 98-78 loss in Marysville on Saturday, Feb. 29 in Round 2 of the CCCAA Northern California Regional Playoffs.
No. 4 seed Yuba advanced to Round 3 and will host Sequoias on Saturday, March 7.
“They were really good,” Giacomazzi said this week of Yuba, champions of the Bay Valley Conference.
Giacomazzi, who notched his 300th career win this season, watched film of the game and noticed again how Yuba kept hitting “very, very difficult shots.”
Moreover, the Hawks were hurt by going just 4 of 22 (18.2%) on 3-point shooting: “That is not gonna cut it,” Giacomazzi said. “The difference in the game was they hit threes and we didn’t.”
Indeed, Brandon Recek paced Yuba with a game-high 33 points, going 6 of 12 from 3-point range and 12 of 22 from the floor. Yuba was 12 of 26 on threes (46.2%).
Nonetheless, the No. 13 seeded Hawks (20-9) had a tough assignment against a talented opponent after a very long drive.
Las Positas had another successful season, advancing to the playoffs for the fifth straight time under Giacomazzi. They placed second alone in the traditionally powerful Coast-North with a 10-4 mark, finishing behind only unbeaten State No. 1 CCSF.
In his final Las Positas game, Michael Hayes paced the Hawks with another impressive double-double of 28 points (10-of-19 shooting) and 17 rebounds, along with three assists and a steal. Fellow sophomore Wesley Burse added 14 points and seven rebounds. Hayes finished sixth in the state in scoring at 21.3 points a game. He was No. 2 in the state in rebounds at 11.4 a game.
