1,261 Fireworks Calls to PD + 70% Vaccinated + 2 New COVID Deaths

Good morning, neighbors! Sylvia Cochran here with today's Long Beach Daily.
In an update to our last report, the City notes that there were 1,261 calls regarding fireworks on Independence Day, which resulted in 38 arrests and 15 citations. Also, LB reached the 70% vaccination rate among adults. Even so, COVID-19 cases are on the rise and officials report two new deaths.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- Update: LB PD’s final July 4 numbers are in. Officers conducted “23 adult felony arrests, 15 misdemeanor arrests and 15 fireworks-related citations.” This was in response to 1,261 calls for service. In comparison, last year on the 4th, officers did “13 felony arrests, 10 misdemeanor arrests and an additional 13 fireworks-related citations.” (City of LB)
- So far, LB has vaccinated 70% of its adult population against COVID-19. This means that 253,638 of those over the age of 18 received at least one vaccine dose. (NBC Los Angeles)
- Daily cases of COVID-19 have reached 4.5 per 100,000 residents. The positivity rate jumped from 0.6% in June to 2.6% in July. Currently, there are 33 patients in LB hospitals with COVID-19. The LB Health Department announced two additional COVID-19 deaths. (LB Post)
- The LB FD responded to a two-alarm fire in a business on the 2500 block of Delta. (@LBFD)
- The LB Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine requests $3 million in grant funding for a 51st Street greenbelt development. The .97-acre property runs along DeForest Avenue between West 51st Street and West 52nd Street. Proposed uses include walking trails, children’s play areas, and landscaping. The space is in Council Member Al Austin’s district. (Memorandum R-28)
