Grand Prix: Taylor Brothers Win IMSA Race

The sons of Wayne Taylor lead from the start as Corvette DP gets a sweep in the Prototype class.

Ricky Taylor led the first lap and brother Jordan Taylor led the last as the brother duo cashed in at the Bubba Gump Sports Car Grand Prix in the streets of Long Beach.

Part of the weekend's Grand Prix of Long Beach, the victory was a welcome relief for the second generation drivers, the sons Wayne Taylor.

They duo led a sweep of the podium for Corvette DPs in the marquee Prototype class on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile layout on the streets of Long Beach.

With its second-place finish, Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi moved into first place in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

Finishing third was Dane Cameron and Eric Curran. The top-finishing non-Corvette was Joel Miller and Tom Long in a Mazda Prototype.

Pole-sitter Fittipaldi said he was too conservative on the first lap when he allowed Ricky Taylor to pass him on the inside.

"He saw an opportunity and I was fair game," he said. "To be honest, I didn't expect a move, and he did an awesome job. ... That's the way racing goes. I'm glad to be leaving Long Beach with the championship lead, which is our focus."

Taylor said being second was actually an advantage in that situation: "You can be the attacking one instead of defending and I was able to brake a little later."

The Prototype Challenge victory went to Stephen Simpson and Misha Goikhberg, who finished ahead of Renger van der Zande and Alex Popow, and Kyle Marcelli and James French. The latter completed the sweep for Oreca FLm 09 Chevrolets even though Marcelli's last-lap crash laid waste to his vehicle.

The GT Le Mans race was won by Patrick Pilet and Nick Tandy, who moved from third to first after their Porsche teammate, Frederic Makowiecki plowed into into leader Tommy Milner in Turn 11 with less that two minutes left in the race. Tandy slipped past unscathed. Three of their five wins have been on street circuits, including twice in a row at Long Beach.
