Lakewood, Long Beach Police Chase Shuts Down 605 Freeway

A Los Angeles County sheriff's cruiser pulled off a successful PIT maneuver as the driver of an SUV tried to get on the 605 Freeway.

LAKEWOOD, CA — Three people were taken into custody Sunday after a pursuit ended with sheriff's deputies using a PIT maneuver to crash the SUV into a center divider on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, the department reported.

The pursuit began in the Lakewood/Long Beach area about 5 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff's department said.

Deputies were trying to pull the SUV over because the motorist was driving on the wrong side of the road and running stop signs and red lights, the LASD said.

A sheriff's cruiser pulled off a successful PIT maneuver as the vehicle tried to enter the 605 Freeway at Spring Street. The SUV came to a stop after striking the center divider under a freeway overpass, the department reported.

The driver and two passengers were taken into custody after the crash, the LASD reported.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down all northbound lanes at the crash site as well as the southbound carpool lane at the site on the 605 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down all northbound lanes at the crash site, as well as the southbound carpool lane. It declared a SigAlert at 5:38 p.m., and has since reopened the slow lane on the northbound side of the 605.

The CHP opened all lanes and canceled the SigAlert at 6:02 p.m., CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig said.

There's no word yet on any injuries.
