Good morning, Long Beach! Here's everything you need to know to get this Thursday started off right.
As the numbers of shootings in the city are skyrocketing, the City Council is mulling over the details of setting up a gun buyback program. Also, LB will have a storm water treatment facility to handle the occasional rainfalls we get. Finally, the Playhouse will pick up where it left off when reopening September 10.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The City will establish its own gun buyback program in response to shootings being up 58.9%. The last time LB hosted a buyback event, it spent $17,000 in gift cards to take 168 guns off the streets. (LB Post)
- The LB City Council approved a $19 million contract for the construction of a storm water treatment facility near the Shoemaker Bridge. Simic Construction Company will handle the project that intends to “capture and purify rainwater spills to improve local water quality.” (California News Times)
- The Long Beach Playhouse announces a September 10 reopening with “Noises Off,” the production that was halfway through its run in March 2020, when everything shut down. (Broadway World)
- The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is one of the recipients of the Bank of America 2021 Art Conservation Project Grant. Funding benefits conservation of sculptures by José Luis Cuevas, Carlos Luna, Luis Torruella, and Noé Katz. (Bank of America)
- “Children of the Avenues” is the brainchild of Myesia Lowery and Noel Russell IV. In addition to using the space to sell their own products, they rent shelf space and pop-up space to other minority entrepreneurs. (LB Business Journal)
