Long Beach Chamber Opposes Ordinance By City Council Requiring Large Grocers To Pay An Extra $4 Per Hour In 'Hero Pay' For Workers (Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce)

In a statement released on Thursday, January 21, 2021, Jeremy Harris, President & CEO, Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, said:

"On behalf of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, our 678 members, representatives, and community stakeholders, we are in opposition of the ordinance by the Long Beach City Council that requires large grocers to pay an extra $4 per hour in “hero pay” for workers.

While we applaud and appreciate all efforts by Long Beach grocery workers throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the premium pay for grocery workers ordinance has been rushed and inadequately studied.

In a rare move that emphasizes the expeditious manner that the ordinance was passed, the City Council will reconvene in a special meeting to address a “procedural error” in approving the legislation.

We fully support the California Grocers Association lawsuit against the City that calls for the ordinance to be declared invalid and unconstitutional, as well as seeking a preliminary injunction to stop implementation of the ordinance until a judge can rule on the merits of its lawsuit."
