Long Beach Driver Who Hit Bicyclist Dies From His Injuries

The driver hit and injured a bicyclist, and then slammed into a light pole in Long Beach Sunday evening.

LONG BEACH, CA – A man whose car struck and injured a bicyclist, then slammed into a light pole in Long Beach, died at a hospital, police announced Monday.

The crash occurred about 8:10 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street, according to Long Beach police.

The man was behind the wheel of a 2018 Ford Fusion, heading south on Bellflower Boulevard, when the car hit a 64-year-old bicyclist from Long Beach. The cyclist was stopping for a red light when he was struck from behind, police said.

The car then continued through the intersection and struck a light pole, police reported. The fatally injured driver's name was withheld pending notification of his family.

The bicyclist was also transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening upper body injuries, according to police.
