Long Beach High School Placed On Lockdown

LONG BEACH, CA – A call of a person armed with a gun that forced a lockdown at Long Beach Polytechnic High School Wednesday occurred a few blocks from the campus, a police spokeswoman said.

Police have determined that a suspect possibly armed with a gun never walked onto the school's campus, yet still prompted officials to lock down the school as a precautionary measure.

Officers determined that the ``person with a gun" call happened ``off 15th Street, between Atlantic Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue," said Arantxa Chavarria of the Long Beach Police Department.

However, the call sent out about 3 p.m. prompted officials to shot down the campus as a precautionary measure, Chavarria said.

There were no reports of any shots being fired, Chavarria said.

As a part of the precautionary lockdown, officers conducted a sweep of the campus, she said, and the Long Beach Police Department sent an alert asking that parents arriving at the school meet their children at Anaheim Street and Atlantic Avenue.

An official with the Long Beach Unified School District told the Long Beach Press-Telegram the police response involved an off-campus incident, and while most students had been dismissed from class at 2:40 p.m., some students were still on campus for sports and after-school activities.
