Long Beach Man Allegedly Attacks Roommate, Kills Pet Parrot

The 18-year-old was charged with a felony count of animal cruelty and misdemeanor battery, and his bail was set at $20,000, officials said.

LONG BEACH, CA – An 18-year-old man pleaded not guilty Thursday to a felony and a misdemeanor for allegedly attacking a man with whom he had been living in Long Beach and killing the victim's parrot.

Edward Cervantes was charged with a felony count of animal cruelty and misdemeanor battery, and his bail was set at $20,000, according to the District Attorney's Office.

According to prosecutors, Cervantes had been staying at the victim's home in the 1300 block of East Ocean Boulevard for several months, but the pair got into an argument sometime Tuesday night. Cervantes allegedly struck the victim several times, then killed the victim's yellow-headed Amazon parrot.

He was arrested a short time later. It was unclear what prompted the attack.

Cervantes is due back in court in Long Beach Jan. 8. He faces up to three years and six months in jail if convicted, prosecutors said.
