Police set up a containment area to search for the gunman but came up empty. The search was halted about 5:30 p.m.

LONG BEACH, CA — Police on Friday evacuated some residents in a North Long Beach neighborhood while searching for a suspect, who was described as a man in his 20s, who shot and killed a woman at a motel. Affected residents were being evacuated to a nearby school, which was not in session because of spring break.
Long Beach police responded to the shooting around 9:50 a.m. at the motel in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and Cambridge Street and found a female victim, LBPD spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.
"The victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition and has since been pronounced deceased," Pratt said.

The area was then combed by SWAT officers, assisted by K-9 patrols, Pratt said.
Residents were advised to stay in their homes during the search. Some residents were evacuated to the campus of a nearby school, which was not in session Friday, Pratt said.
The search was halted about 5:30 p.m. and the perimeter broken down, Pratt said.
"We're now letting people back into their residences," Pratt said about 7 p.m.
The suspect was last seen wearing a red shirt and blue jeans, Pratt said.
Anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts was asked to call LBPD Detectives Peter Lackovic or Sean Irving at (562) 570-5273. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
