Long Beach PD, Coroner Looking Into In-Custody Death

Police officers helped security guards apprehend and detain the suspect, who was pronounced dead after paramedics took him to a hospital.

Homicide detectives and the county coroner's office are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who died after being detained by security guards and Long Beach Police officers following a pursuit on industrial property Saturday evening.

A security company watching over a property on the 6200 block of Paramount Avenue called for police aid while one of its guards was chasing the suspect, a release from the police department states. According to police, the suspect first entered a few employee vehicles and eventually tried to take away a security guard's vehicle, triggering a struggle and then a foot chase. The suspect was later caught after trying to jumping a fence, and police eventually handcuffed him.

But then, according to the police statement, "the subject went into medical distress, and officers requested paramedics and began performing life saving measures. Paramedics responded and transported the subject to a local hospital. However, despite efforts by officers and paramedics, he was pronounced deceased."

Police had no identity on the suspect, but estimated his age to be in the 20s or 30s. The release also notes that homicide detectives checking out the situation is standard practice for any in-custody deaths.
