Police Seek Witnesses To Crash That Killed Bicyclist

The victim was hit by a car at the intersection of Orange Avenue and 52nd Street in Long Beach.

LONG BEACH, CA – Police Tuesday sought witnesses to a vehicle collision that fatally injured a bicyclist in Long Beach.

The victim was hit about 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the intersection of Orange Avenue and 52nd Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers were called to the scene and located the bicyclist, a 38-year- old resident of Long Beach, and fire department personnel took him to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries to his head and body, police said.

"The preliminary investigation revealed a 21-year-old female resident of Long Beach, driving a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, was traveling southbound on Orange Avenue approaching 52nd Street on a green light," according to a police statement. "The bicyclist ... was traveling southbound on Orange Avenue in the northbound lanes against traffic, approaching 52nd Street.

"Upon entering the intersection, the bicyclist made a westbound right turn on 52nd Street, against a red light. The bicyclist was struck by the Chevrolet Cruze entering the intersection on a green light. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The driver was later released, pending further investigation."
