It’s another beautiful day in Long Beach, the Aquatic Capital of America!

Welcome to the Long Beach Patch Daily Newsletter, the easiest and most enjoyable way to know what’s happening down the street and around the corner.

The latest installment in the Queen Mary telenovela is an external threat. A Soviet submarine of uncertain ownership is moored next to the ship. However, it’s in bad shape and could damage the Queen with an ill-timed roll. Also, LBCC will offer summer vaccination clinics to anyone over 12 years. Finally, the LAWineFest is coming back, and it’s setting up shop – where else? – close to the Queen Mary.

There’s a weather alert lasting until Friday at 12 a.m. Higher than normal tides may lead to beach corrosion and make rock jetties “deadly.”

Even though it’s oak pollen season, along with sagebrush and chenopods, levels of pollen in the air are increasing slightly but still considered low to medium.

The Five News Headlines That Everyone’s Talking About

  1. A Soviet submarine moored next to the Queen Mary is the latest threat to the ship’s wellbeing. The Cold War relic used to be a tourist attraction until 2015. Nobody’s sure who owns the “Scorpion” or who’s in charge of maintaining the sub that’s taking on water. (LB Post)
  2. Long Beach City College will become a vaccination clinic location this summer. The clinic will be open to anyone over the age of 12. (LBCC)
  3. The 15th annual LAWineFest is a go. Planned for October 2nd and 3rd, it’ll take place at the Harry Bridges Memorial Park near the Queen Mary. (LAWineFest)
  4. Andy, a 100-pound, sulcata desert tortoise, is a bit of an escapee. Fortunately, the neighbors off Bixby and the mail carrier already know to look out for him. So, when he got out recently, he spent the day at a neighbor’s yard and got a cart ride home the next day. (LB Press Telegram)
  5. While the LB Port is busier than ever, it’s not all good. Case in point is a shipment of 57,607 counterfeit products. They ran the gamut from imitation Cialis to bogus Louis Vuitton. The LAPD will take point in the investigation. (NBC Los Angeles)
