Alex Trebek Takes Break From ‘Jeopardy!’ After Brain Surgery

Alex Trebek said he had to undergo surgery after a fall caused blood clots to form on his brain.

CULVER CITY, CA — Alex Trebek, the host of the popular quiz show “Jeopardy!”, was forced to undergo surgery after blood clots formed on his brain, he announced Thursday.

“I had a slight medical problem ― subdural hematoma ― blood clots on the brain caused by a fall I endured about two months ago,” Trebek said in a video posted to YouTube. Trebek added that he spent two days in the hospital and had to undergo surgery because of the clots.

But Trebek said “the prognosis is excellent” and that he expects to be back in the studio, taping new episodes of “Jeopardy!” soon.

A spokesperson for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produces the show, told NBC News that taping of “Jeopardy!” was temporarily suspended while Trebek recovers.

"Alex spent Christmas at home with his family, and he will return to the 'Jeopardy!' studio for taping in mid-January,” the company told NBC.

The show is a syndicated program and is taped months in advance of air date. The only schedule change caused by Trebek’s medical issue will be a delay in the annual college championship in April, the show told NBC
