Watch: Big Rig Driver Intervenes To End Wild Police Chase

A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting, flipped off police during a wild four-county chase that ended with a crash in Pomona.

POMONA, CA — A suspect who led police on a wild four-county chase across Southern California is in custody today after a truck driver blocked his path, bringing the chase to a crashing halt Tuesday night.

The chase began at about 5 p.m. Tuesday when Riverside County Sheriff's deputies and the California Highway Patrol began chasing a dark pickup truck driven by a "person of interest" in a fatal shooting, according to U.S. Marshalls. The truck fled, leading officers south to San Diego County, back through Riverside to San Bernardino County and into Los Angeles County. Throughout the hours-long chase, the suspect threw papers out the window, flipped off pursuing officers and sped along the freeway shoulder to bypass heavy traffic.

As the news helicopters followed the high-speed chase, a big rig driver in Pomona realized the suspect was heading his way. The suspect had exited the eastbound Pomona Freeway in Pomona and led authorities through several residential areas, alleys and parking lots. At one point, the man's erratic driving caused a head-on collision between a sedan and a box truck, though no one was reported injured.

"I was waiting for him," Shabaan told the station. "I was trying to see where he was at exactly so I could pinpoint him, and then I blocked him."

Shabaan said his instincts kicked in and he took action.

"I just thought to get him off the street, because if I didn't, if (authorities) had been behind him for that long and didn't stop him, I have the power."

He surrendered to police and was identified as by Bakersfield TV station KGET as Michael Caleb Reed, who was wanted in connection to a 40-year-old man on March 28 in Kern County. Reed was being held without bail Wednesday.

Reed's female passenger escaped the crash uninjured.

Identifying herself as Roxy, she told reporters they were on their way to help a friend of Reed's who had been shot., "We were hanging out and he said he wanted to help his friend in LA," Roxy told Fox 11. "I said, 'I am down to roll. It's all good. We'll go help your friend.'"
