Freeway Sinkhole Triggers Hours-Long SigAlert In Los Angeles

A pair of sinkholes snarled the downtown Los Angeles morning commute, triggering a lane 101 Freeway lane closure expected to last hours.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Wednesday morning downpours opened up a pair of sinkholes that snarled downtown traffic and triggered an hours-long SigAlert on the Hollywood (101) Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for the northbound 101 Freeway expected to last until after noon as crews work to repair a large sinkhole that opened up in the #4 lane near Spring Street. Traffic was reportedly backed up to Fourth Street.

Another sinkhole is in the 1200 block of Elden Avenue in the Pico- Union neighborhood. It is about 3 feet wide and "probably about 10 feet deep and open up on the inside," Sgt. Richard Boyd of the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA.

"Definitely not a situation that we're going to let people come near or drive up to," Boyd said.

Neighbors told the news station the sinkhole started out as a small pothole that just kept growing until a sinkhole formed.

The series of storms pounding Southern California has wreaked havoc on the roadways in Los Angeles.

Last month's storms triggered a massive sinkhole in Chatsworth that ate up two cars and shut down the street for weeks.
