HMLA to Discuss the Rise of White Supremacy Post WWII

Professor Steven J. Ross and Former Congressman Mel Levine to Discuss the Rise of White Supremacy and How It Led to the Events of Jan. 6

Holocaust Museum LA presents “How We Got Here: From the Good War to the Storming of the Capitol” Tuesday, May 18, at 4 p.m. The virtual event will feature a discussion between Steven J. Ross, dean's professor of history at the University of Southern California and director of the Casden Institute for the study of the Jewish role in American life, and former Congressmember Mel Levine, currently serving as counsel at the international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Ross and Levine will examine the rise of white supremacists following World War II; their desire to rid the United States of Jewish and Black residents; and the three New York-based groups that spied on them from 1945 until the late 1970s and beyond: the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League and the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League. Ross’ current book “Battling Hate: Undercover Resistance to Racism and Anti-Semitism in Post World War II America,” explores this topic.

Ross is also the author of “Hitler in Los Angeles: How Jews Foiled Nazi Plots Against Hollywood and America,” a Pulitzer Prize finalist. His book "Hollywood Left and Right: How Movie Stars Shaped American Politics" (2011) won an Academy of Motion Pictures Film Scholars Award and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
