Human Bones Found In Burbank Wilderness Area

A hiker discovered human remains just off a trail in the mountainous area around Burbank, and authorities hope a witness will come forward.

BURBANK, CA — A hiker's grisly discovery of bones in the Verdugo mountainous area around Burbank turned out to be human remains, authorities confirmed Monday. Now, police hope someone will come forward with information about the death.

The hiker found the skeletal remains that appeared to be human Thursday afternoon near a hiking trail above Elmwood Avenue. Homicide detectives and an investigator from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office were sent to the scene, said Burbank police Sgt. Emil Brimway.

"The Los Angeles County coroner investigator determined the skeletal remains were, in fact, human," Brimway said in a statement released Monday. "The potential identification of the decedent can take upwards of several months to a year."
