Nathan Dulley + LBB on Trail-Blazing with the Greats

Nathan Dulley shares his personal opinion on trail-blazing in SoCal.

Unlike any other place on this great green earth, Southern California is steeped in prestigious mountain-biking lore. From the greats like Tom Ritchey, Chris Kelly, and Gary Fisher, the mountain bike industry in SoCal has quite literally blazed the trail for countless enthusiasts around the country and the world.

But before you start thinking this is the stuff of legends, it’s important to note that the great Golden State has been blessed with some pretty amazing terrain. Some even argue this sport began in Southern California - others chalk it up to wishful thinking on behalf of the laid-back sun-soaked residents of the nation’s third largest state. But whether it’s simply a good PR ploy or the stuff science is made of (facts), the fact remains that California has some pretty amazing trails - both for the novice and the avid biker.

Beloved and revered by many, the trails in Nisene are universally applauded for the excellent shape they are kept in year round. A steady climb to the forest, the huge banking turns, and natural terrain features provide a time that feels more like flying than riding. And, for the more advanced, there are even a few spots that’ll leave you white-knuckled and holding on for dear life — if that's what you’re into.

San Juan Trail (Mission Viejo, CA)

It’s impossible to write a blog on mountain biking trails without mentioning the San Juan Trail. Considered by many to be the best bike trail in SoCal, the San Juan delivers a true “mountaintop” experience to those looking for a great cruize on the trail. With nearly 3,500 feet of climbing, if you ride it as an out-and-back, the trail is truly a breathtaking thrill. Some even put the climbing as high as 5,700 feet of gain with a 40-mile route.

Tahoe Rim Trail (Lake Tahoe, CA)

Ahhh… Lake Tahoe. Almost everyone is familiar with this beautiful lake, but not as many are familiar with the great trails that soar above the beautiful body of water. If you’re looking for a trail with a view, then this is absolutely one of the best places to go in Cali. With the Tahoe Rim Trail, there are even a few shuttle services available to take you to the routes. Bring food, water, and a charged phone/camera - you’ll want to capture this experience.

Whether you’re a resident of SoCal, thinking of making a trip, or a just a budding mountain bike lover, these trails are excellent places to hone your skills and have a ton of fun. Remember, always ride safe and never go faster than your friends on the trail are (but never slower). Get out there, ride, and have a great time - what else is there?
