LOS ANGELES, CA — For once, Tuesday might be the best day of the week. It's the day we've all been waiting for: the economic reopening of the state.

If your vaccinated, you can ditch your mask and cheer your loudest with a full crowd at Dodger Stadium today or wait in line maskless with huge crowds at Disneyland. You can find the full rundown of where you still need a mask and where your face can go naked here.

The other big news of the day is the heatwave. The first heatwave of the summer kicks today, and it will bring deadly heat to the valleys and mountains.

Patch Pick: Being too cool for school will soon be a thing of the past in South Los Angeles where the newest public high school to open will be an academy in partnership with Dr. Dre. "This new partnership with Jimmy (Iovine), Dr. Dre and the USC Iovine and Young Academy will help open the doors of opportunity for students, in particular Black and Latino children, from communities which have been historically underserved," LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner said. "Much like the work of the Academy, this effort will help develop the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators. (More on Patch)."

Here are 5 of Los Angeles County's top news stories of the day:

  1. With high vaccine rates and low COVID-19 transmission rates, Los Angeles is well-positioned for the state's reopening. However, the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which is already here, does pose a risk. Studies show it to be much more contagious and likely to lead to hospitalization (More on Patch).
  2. It was 2008 when California voters passed a ban on same-sex marriage. The LGBTQ community has made much progress since then. Now, the Beverly Hills School Board voted to pass a resolution in support of the LGBTQ community, and to display a Progress Pride flag at every school and facility in the district every June. The Progress Pride flag, designed in 2018, combines the traditional rainbow flag with blue, pink, and white stripes from the Transgender Pride Flag, and black and brown stripes to represent LGBTQ communities of color (More on Patch).
  3. Home prices in the San Fernando Valley soured 26 percent in a year, reaching new highs. In the same time period, sales more than doubled. The annual income needed to afford the median home in the San Fernando Valley, which is creeping up to $1 million, will shock you (More on Patch).
  4. The Astros; cheating scandal unfolded in a staggered fashion, and MLB moved on without ever really addressing the impact it had on the Dodgers in the World Series. The Los Angeles Times recently ran a great piece delving into the evidence of cheating during the fateful postseason when the 'Best team in baseball,' lost in a major upset (More on the Los Angeles Times).
  5. The forecast for this week's heatwave is raising fears of heat-related illnesses, strain on the power grid and the possibility of brush fires (More on Patch).
