Shooting On 91 Is Fourth Southland Freeway Shooting In 3 Days

Authorities do not believe any of the unsettling freeway shootings are connected.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Authorities are investigating the Southland’s fourth freeway shooting in less than three days. The four shootings occurred along stretches of the San Gabriel (605) and Artesia (91) Freeway and the Golden State (5) Freeway. Investigators don’t believe the shootings are connected.

The latest shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Monday night on the westbound 91 Freeway east of the Long Beach (710) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ramberto Salcido.
Two bullet holes were confirmed in the side-door area, said Salcido. The suspect was seen driving a grey Honda Accord, he said.

The victim told KTLA she was driving home when she noticed a dark-colored sedan driving erratically, and then she heard a series of loud pops. When she got home she noticed the bullet holes in her car. She told KTLA she was just grateful she didn’t have her 1-year-old nephew in the car with her like she often does.

Though a dark-colored sedan was spotted in two of the three other freeway shootings that occurred in the area since Saturday, the cases appear to be unrelated, Salcido said.

“For some reason, we have a little spike (in shootings), unfortunately,” he said.

Salcido said there may not be a single explanation for the rash of free shootings. Over the last month, local headlines have been dominated by more than 100 pellet gun freeway shootings and the road rage shooting death of a six-year-old boy on his way to kindergarten in Orange County.

Sunday’s shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. on the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway near Euclid Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, who was not injured, told authorities that shots were fired at his car from another vehicle, described as a black Ford Fusion with tinted windows, FOX11 reported.

That shooting followed two on Saturday night. Just before 11:30 p.m. a man was shot while riding a motorcycle southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway near Arrow Highway, the CHP reported. The victim, an Azusa man in his 30s, was taken by paramedics to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center with a single gunshot wound. His status was not immediately clear. The suspect in that case was another biker, KTLA reported.

That shooting came about 5 hours after a shooting on the southbound 605 Freeway at Lower Azusa Road, according to the CHP. One vehicle crashed in that shooting, but no one was struck by the gunfire, according to the CHP. The shooter’s vehicle was described as a dark sedan.

The CHP's Baldwin Park office urged anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at 626-338-1164.
