SigAlert: 605 Freeway Reopens Following Fatal Pileup

A vehicle overturned and one person died in a five-vehicle pileup in Whittier ​Friday morning.

WHITTIER, CA —One person died in a pileup on the northbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Whittier Friday morning. The crash, which involved an overturned vehicle and a big rig, shut down several lanes of the freeway overnight, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers were called to the scene at the 605 and the Rose Hills Road off- ramp at about 2:27 a.m., said Officer Patrick Kimball of the California Highway Patrol. The crash closed down the Rose Hills Road off-ramp to the 605, plus the northbound HOV lane and the northbound numbers one, two and three lanes of the 605., according to the CHP. The roadway was cleared, and the SigAlert was canceled shortly before 8 a.m.

At least five vehicles and possibly a big rig were involved, authorities said.

The victim was not immediately identified, and the cause and other details of the accident are under investigation, Kimball said.
