SigAlert: Overturned Big Rig Shuts Down 91/605 Transition

A big rig carrying vegetable oil nearly turned the 91/605 Freeway transition into a slip-and-slide Thursday.

CERRITOS, CA — A big rig carrying vegetable oil overturned on the transition road from state Route 91 to the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, blocking the road for about nine hours and triggering a Hazmat team response Thursday.

Hazmat crews arrived to find the slippery load firmly intact. However, the truck needed to be safely removed, prompting the California Highway Patrol to issue a SigAlert of unknown duration.

The truck crashed and overturned at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday on the eastbound 91 to the northbound 605, according to the California Highway Patrol. A SigAlert was issued by the CHP at 9:47 a.m. Caltrans announced at about 6:40 p.m. that the eastbound ArtesiaFreeway transition to the northbound San Gabriel River Freeway was reopened.
