Video: Recognize This Murder Suspect?

Police hope someone will recognize a man suspected of shooting and killing a passerby in what may have been a random encounter.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Nearly a year after a Westlake shooting that took the life of a 48-year-old man, authorities on Friday released video footage of the murder suspect in hopes that someone will recognize him.

The security footage shows a man walking down the street with his hand in his jacket. According to the Los Angeles Police, the footage shows the man who shot a passerby on South Alvarado Street before fleeing on foot Jan. 6. Police found Eric Perez suffering gunshot wound to the chest about 7:30 p.m. Jan 6 in the 900 block of South Alvarado Street, near James M. Wood Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The unidentified suspect had been walking southbound on Alvarado Street when he passed Perez on the east sidewalk and shouted something at him, causing Perez to turn around and face the suspect, according to police.

"Both victim and suspect walked toward each other, at which time the suspect produced a handgun from his waistband. The suspect fired one shot, striking the victim in the chest," according to an LAPD statement.

The suspect fled on foot southbound on Alvarado Street to eastbound Olympic Boulevard, according to police.

He's described as having black hair and a goatee, and was wearing a black jacket with white stripes, a gray work shirt, light blue jeans and brown work boots.
