Watch: Mercedes Goes Flying Off 110 Overpass
Passersby attempted to help free the driver after his car flew off the overpass, flipped and erupted in flames.
LOS ANGELES, CA — A driver is fighting for his life today after his Mercedes-Benz flew off a downtown Los Angeles overpass above the Harbor (110) Freeway, erupting into flames as it crashed into Palm Trees. California Highway Patrol officers and paramedics pulled the driver, a 48-year-old Los Angeles man, from the wreckage.
The crash briefly shut down freeway lanes overnight as the damage to the overpass was repaired. The dramatic crash was captured on a dashboard camera. It occurred at about 10:50 p.m. Thursday near the Sixth Street exit, according to the California Highway Patrol. Only the Mercedes-Benz was involved in the crash, and CHP investigators suspect that high-speed may have been a factor in the crash.
The car flew off the overpass, struck a strand of palm trees alongside the freeway, and flipped over, erupting into flames. Passersby attempted to free the driver.

“I was trying to pull him out … he was trapped inside,” Fernando Salazar told KTLA.
CHP officers also worked to free the drivers, but firefighters had to douse the flames so the driver could be freed. The driver suffered burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
