Wind Advisory Extended In LA: See Top Wind Speeds

A wind advisory was extended into Monday in LA, where gusty Santa Ana winds raked the Southland over the weekend.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Winds pummeled the Southland over the weekend, where a wind advisory was extended through 3 p.m. on Monday for most areas of Los Angeles County as gusty conditions were predicted to persist, forecasters said Sunday.

The advisory was extended for the mountains — including the Santa Monica Range — the coast, downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds were expected to taper off Sunday afternoon and evening. But offshore gusts will return Monday.

In the mountains, gusts were forecast to reach 60 mph Monday morning. The San Fernando Valley could see winds blowing 50 mph while the coastal and downtown areas will likely see 40 mph winds, NWS officials said.

The strongest winds will be felt along I-5 in the Grapevine.

A high-pressure system building from the west will also bring the heat for Angelenos on Sunday, trickling into Monday. Temperatures were forecast to reach up to 75 degrees Sunday afternoon and up to 80 degrees Monday.

"Temperatures on Monday will top out in the 70s to around 80s west of the mountains to the mid 60s to mid 70s across interior sections," NWS officials said.

The rest of the week will be relatively warm, with temperature heights hovering around the mid to high 70s.

"Other than the wind, the forecast is rather benign through Wednesday," NWS officials said. "Skies will remain clear through Monday."

Winds could toss unsecured objects around and make driving difficult, forecasters warned. The weather service also warned that tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

On Sunday, a large tree fell on top of two parked cars, along South Beverly Drive, according to several reports. Power outages were also reported throughout L.A. County on Sunday, where more than 1,700 were out of power before 1 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Times.

Meanwhile, a cold-weather alert was issued through Thursday for L.A. County's mountains and the Antelope Valley. There, wind-child temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees at night.

"Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather," Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said after issuing the alert. "Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don't get too cold when they are outside."
