Pandemic Declines Offer a Return to Normalcy in Senior Living

State of California statistics tracking the virility of the Covid-19 pandemic has shown a dramatic decline in recent weeks. The number of overall cases, since the holiday surge, has fallen 90-percent statewide. And, state officials are in the process of updating their tier information on Bay Area counties which will lead to the reopening of restaurants, entertainment venues, gym and retails outlets.

A return to a more normal lifestyle is especially welcomed by those who provide housing and support for the vulnerable senior population. A sector hit hard by the pandemic with service levels and local employment all hinging on a return to normalcy. “The recent news is hopeful in that we may finally be seeing the recovery,” said Michael O’Rourke, CEO, Westmont Living. “Lower infection rates coupled with increased volume of vaccinations all point to a brighter summer. We build beautiful buildings to accommodate a social and active senior lifestyle, but it is the residents that transform our buildings into a home.”

According to the Mercury News, “For a county to exit purple and enter the red tier, its adjusted case rate must fall below 7 per 100,000, and its weekly positivity rate cannot be higher than 8%... Every county in the Bay Area already meets the red tier’s positivity rate threshold. When Santa Clara and a number of other Bay Area counties eventually exit purple, it will be their first time in a less restrictive tier since Nov. 16.” Statistics are updated weekly on Tuesday.

A big part of the recovery, for those on the front lines, will be to increase social connection for the seniors. “We bring the community into our building so that residents have a myriad of opportunities with which to engage,” said Dimple Kamdar, executive director, Westmont Village of Milpitas. “Our staff is ready, and our residents are ready to put this pandemic behind us. We can’t wait to get back the group activities and social connections lost during the past year.”

Westmont of Milpitas at 80 Cedar Way, Milpitas, CA 95035 officially opened its doors in September 2020, before the holiday surge hit the Bay Area. The community features 207, studio, one- and two-bedroom apartment homes for independent, assisted living, and memory care residents with nurses staffed 24/7. “Westmont of Milpitas offers comfortable living at a reasonable price when you factor in the fitness center with a heated indoor pool, health and wellness programs, a movie theater, concierge services, and underground parking. And it’s all waiting for our new residents to enjoy,” said O’Rourke.
