IBEW Local 332 & SCVNECA Donate To Christmas In The Park

The"Giving Tree" at Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose is glowing with programmed LED lighting for the first time this year.

The 50 foot “Giving Tree” at Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose is glowing with programmed LED lighting for the first time this year, thanks to the efforts of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 332 and the Santa Clara Valley National Electrical Contractors Association (SCVNECA).

IBEW Local 332 and SCVNECA donated and installed the tree’s new energy-saving LED lighting system at a cost of $26,400. They also are sponsors of the Christmas in the Park event, providing another $10,000 in donations, for a total donation of $36,400. They have been decorating the tree at the event for over 30 years.

Some 60 IBEW Local 332 volunteer electricians and apprentices worked in two shifts all-day to decorate the tree with 100 strands of LED lights, installing the lights to code. The multi-colored LED lights are programmed and synched to music, providing both visual and musical entertainment on a daily basis.

The new LED lighting system offers an 85% energy savings from the traditional lights used during previous years. LED lights produce light about 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs.

The IBEW and SCVNECA volunteers installed the LED lights with boom lifts, and also decorated the tree with other ornaments. The LED light installation was coordinated by Javier Casillas, President of IBEW Local 332. After installing the LED lights, the volunteers stayed and helped deliver trees and set up various decorations at the site.

“Christmas in the Park is a great event, because it helps to bridge the generations from apprenticeship to retirees in keeping the traditions and values of the community, “said Javier Casillas, IBEW Local 332 President.

Doug Lung, Executive Director of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Santa Clara Valley Chapter, said NECA and the IBEW were involved in the event as “part of our ongoing efforts to give back to the community.” “This is a great family event, and we are delighted to be able to bring LED lighting to it this year,” he said.
