Man Killed in Construction Accident Identified

The accident happened Tuesday morning in Santa Clara County, at a home site.

A man struck and killed by an excavator while at work Tuesday morning just outside of San Jose was identified today as 24-year-old Andres Alvarez Esquivel, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Alvarez Esquivel worked for Blue Sierra Construction Inc., a San Jose-based company, said Julia Bernstein, a spokeswoman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Around 11:20 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a home construction site near Bruce Way and Almaden Road, where they learned the bucket of an excavator hit the man, sheriff’s Sgt. James Jensen said.

San Jose firefighters also responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene, Jensen said.

Soon afterward, Cal/OSHA issued an order halting work at the site. The order remained in place as of this afternoon, Bernstein said. The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office and Cal/OSHA.
