SETI: Two of Pluto's Moons Named

"Vulcan," suggested by William Shatner, received strong consideration.

Pluto may no longer be the outermost planet in our solar system, but it still has the interest of NASA and SETI Institute scientists.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has officially named Pluto's smallest moon, known as P4 and P5, Kerberos and Styx, the SETI Institute announced in a press release Tuesday. Dr. Mark Showalter, senior research scientist at SETI Mountain View led the team of astronomers in the discoveries of Kerberos and Styx.

P4 was named Kerberos, after the three-headed dog of Greek mythology. P5 has been named Styx, after the mythological river that separates the world of the living from the realm of the dead.
