10 Years Of War: Southwest Riverside Suffers Casualties
It's been 10 years since the start of the Iraq War. Southwest Riverside County lost nine in that conflict. In the Afghanistan conflict, the region has lost seven.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003โand although officially "over," fighting continues.
By one count, theย war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to theย Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.
Among them, nine service members from southwest Riverside County were killed. From the CNN war casualtiesย web site:

- Capt. Brian Scott Freeman, 31, of Temecula was one of five soldiers killed while repelling an attack on the Provincial Joint Coordination Center in Karbala, Iraq, Jan. 20, 2007.
- Spc. Mary Jane Jaenichen, 20, of Temecula died on a non-combat related injury in Iskandariya, Iraq, May 9, 2008.
- Sgt. Stephen Patrick Saxton, 24, of Temecula was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee while his unit was conducting a route security mission in Baghdad, Iraq, May 3, 2005.
- Pfc. Daniel Ray Parker, 18, of Lake Elsinore was fatally injured when he was thrown from his vehicle after the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, Aug. 12, 2003.
- Lance Cpl. Justin Thomas Hunt, 22, of Wildomar was one of five Marines killed when a roadside bomb detonated underneath their vehicle near Falluja in Anbar province, Iraq, July 6, 2004.
- Lance Cpl. Fernando Baxter Hannon, 19, of Wildomar died from injuries received from hostile action in Anbar province, Iraq, Aug. 15, 2004.
- Sgt. Nathan Kalani Bouchard, 24, of Wildomar was one of four soldiers killed when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee following a mine-assessing mission in Samara, Iraq, on Aug. 18, 2005.
- Lance Cpl. Jeromy D. West, 20, of Aguanga was killed during combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq, on November 25, 2006.
- Staff Sgt. Christopher Ralph Webb, 28, of Winchester was one of three soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their vehicle during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 7, 2007.
In the Afghanistan conflict, the following local servicemen lost their lives:
- , of Temecula died of wounds received from small-arms fire while on patrol near Sangin in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Jan. 21, 2012.
- , of Menifee was one of two soldiers killed when enemy forces attacked their units with small-arms fire in the Watahpur district Kunar province, Afghanistan, on June 25, 2011.
- , of Murrieta was killed when his forward operating base came under enemy fire in Pul-e Alam, Logar province, Afghanistan, on July 23, 2012. He was at the base on the first leg of his redeployment back to the United States. He kept a blog while deployed and his last post recounted how he felt about returning home.
- of Murrieta was one of two soldiers killed when an individual wearing an Afghan National Police uniform opened fire on them in the Khas Uruzgan district of Uruzgan province, Afghanistan, on October 25, 2012.
- Pfc. Nicolas Hugh Joseph Gideon, 20, of Murrieta died July 6, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered earlier that day in Paktia province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fires.
- of Lake Elsinore was one of three soldiers killed when enemy forces attacked their unit with a roadside bomb in the Gardez district of Paktia province, Afghanistan, Dec. 27, 2011.
- , of Lake Elsinore died following a roadside bomb attack during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, March 29, 2012.
