MURRIETA, CA โ€” In an effort to halt illegal fireworks amid dangerously dry drought conditions, Murrieta police and Murrieta Fire & Rescue have announced authorities will be cracking down on the personal use of fireworks this Fourth of July.

Dubbed the "You Lite It, We Cite It" campaign, citizens in Murrieta who light up fireworks and get caught will be issued a $1,000 citation and pay the costs of damages in case of fire, according to authorities.

Murrieta Fire Chief David Lantzer said authorities are counting on the public to help keep Murrieta safe and fire-free this holiday.

To report fireworks violations, use the non-emergency dispatch number at 951-696-3615 or visit www.MurrietaCA./gov/fireworks. Provide a specific address if possible. Do not call 9-1-1 unless it is a true emergency, Lantzer said.

Parents whose children get caught with fireworks can also expect fines.

โ€œTeens and young adults are especially at risk,โ€ Murrieta Police Chief Tony Conrad added, โ€œas they may not be aware of local laws and significant fines. By making sure the children and young adults understand the dangers and the penalties involved in illegal firework, you can help ensure it never becomes an issue.โ€

Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Chief Bill Weiser had a similar message for residents, including those living in unincorporated areas around Murrieta such as La Cresta, Tenaja and other rural areas. Anyone who gets caught lighting fireworks in unincorporated areas or in cities that contract with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department can expect a $5,000 fine and will be held responsible for all fire suppression costs in case a blaze ignites, the chief said.

Weiser reported 19,500 wildfires ignited last year across the country as a result of fireworks.

He also reminded residents that fireworks cause emotional trauma for many military veterans as well as beloved pets and wild animals.
