Winchester Fire Near Diamond Valley Lake Fully Contained

UPDATE: The blaze, which scorched 28 acres, was fully contained late Tuesday afternoon.

WINCHESTER, CA — A fire that erupted Tuesday in a field southwest of Diamond Valley Lake in Winchester scorched approximately 25 acres before crews got it partially contained.

The non-injury blaze dubbed the Scott Fire was reported at 1:05 p.m. near the intersection of Scott and Winchester roads, less than two miles from the lake, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. No homes or other structures were threatened.

Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate clip in medium vegetation, across open ground. Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter initiated runs on the blaze at 1:25 p.m.

By 1:55 p.m., the fire had slowed, allowing crews to establish tentative containment lines, and the aircraft were released, returning to Hemet-Ryan Airport, according to reports from the scene.

California Highway Patrol officers shut down southbound lanes on Winchester, between Pouroy Road and Scott, as a safety precaution.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
