Heat Wave Warning Elevated Across Much Of Riverside County

Conditions will be more oppressive than previously forecasted.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA โ€” The National Weather Service has heightened its message about the upcoming heat wave, saying Friday that Inland Empire temperatures will be hotter this weekend than previously forecasted.

The NWS raised its "excessive heat watch" to "excessive heat warning" for much of Riverside County, with temperatures expected to climb well past 100 across the region. The NWS's excessive heat warning extends from 10 a.m. Sunday through 9 p.m. Monday.

The Coachella Valley will experience "dangerously hot conditions with temperatures up to 116," according to the agency.

The same dangerous conditions will be present in the San Gorgonio Pass Area, where the mercury is forecast to hit 112, and mountain communities, where residents will experience daytime highs of 100, the NWS reported.

Riverside County valleys, including Southwest Riverside County, will not fare much better, with temperatures expected to reach at least 104. But the NWS said the area is under a "heat advisory," not the more dire "warning."

The agency cautioned that overnight lows for all areas will not bring substantial cooling.

Pets, small children and senior citizens are at risk during torrential heat.

"Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the NWS warned.

Additionally, the "extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," the agency said.
