Man Killed On I-215 Identified

CHP officials say the man was hit and killed while on a freeway offramp.

MURRIETA, CA โ€” A Murrieta man who was fatally struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross a freeway offramp has been publicly identified. Riverside County coroner's officials say 60-year-old Eddie Burt died at the scene of the Jan. 30 wreck in Murrieta.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig, Burt was hit by a Temecula man in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma who "was unable to stop" in time and slammed into the Murrieta man, who was on foot at that the time.

The man was declared dead about 20 minutes after the 5:18 a.m. crash, coroner's officials said.

The CHP is investigating the deadly crash, which allegedly happened shortly after Burt was involved in a non-injury hit-and-run crash on westbound Murrieta Hot Springs near the 215.

Burt's Toyota Camry was damaged in that crash and became disabled as he tried to exit the freeway, Lassig said.

"He exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the offramp on foot in an easterly direction," Lassig said.

However, the man darted directly into the path of the approaching Tacoma, according to the CHP.
