Martin Scorsese Tribute Comes To Murrieta
A month-long retrospective will feature four of his blockbuster hit films: "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas" and "Casino."
MURRIETA, CA โ The iconic film director Martin Scorsese is being celebrated at Reading Cinemas in Murrieta during a month-long retrospective featuring four of his blockbuster hits.
"Taxi Driver" (1976), "Raging Bull" (1980), "Goodfellas" (1990) and "Casino" (1995) will be screened at the theater located at Cal Oaks Plaza, 41090 California Oaks Rd. Shows start at 7 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning March 4, with all tickets priced at $13.
Screening on March 4, "Taxi Driver" โ starring Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, Leonard Harris and Albert Brooks โ was nominated for four Academy Awards, including for Best Picture, Best Actor (for De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress (for Foster, who was just 12 years old when the film was made). The film was considered "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant by the U.S. Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1994.

Screening on March 11, "Raging Bull" is a biographical sports drama based on boxer Jake LaMotta's memoir "Raging Bull: My Story." The film once again teams De Niro (who portrayed LaMotta in the film) and Scorsese. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. De Niro took home an Oscar for Best Actor, and the film also won in the Best Editing category. In 1990, it became the first film to be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in its first year of eligibility.
Screening on March 18, "Goodfellas" is an adaptation of the 1985 non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the film's screenplay with Scorsese. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Joe Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as gangster Tommy DeVito. "Goodfellas" is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in the gangster genre, and in 2000 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Screening on March 25, "Casino" stars De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Pesci, and is based on the nonfiction book "Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas" by Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Scorsese. The primary characters are based on real people, and the movie further launched Stone's career โ she grabbed a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and snagged a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
